Some More Pictures
Feb. 24th, 2011 04:39 pmToday we went back to our house to collect some clean clothes and get some toys for the kids. I hadn't been back over that side of town since the quake and the streets are quite horrific. It's even worse when you realise that the ones we were on are drivable so they aren't the worst hit. My across the road neighbour told me that on some of the streets nearby, close to New Brighton, some of the houses have lost frontages and whole roads are torn up. I haven't seen it for myself, but I'd believe it since the first reports were that New Brighton was 'unlivable' and these streets are close. Anyway, here are some pictures I took on my travels.
1. QEII Drive where we got stuck in traffic. Liquefaction on the other side of the road.

1. QEII Drive where we got stuck in traffic. Liquefaction on the other side of the road.
2. Also QEII Drive, our side of the road. Was able to get past but this sort of breakage is common right through our neighbourhood so roads are difficult to get across and bottlenecks are occuring on those that are even usable.
3. Roundabout at Anzac Drive. As you can see it's very difficult to get around there and Anzac Drive itself is closed off.
4. The other side of the same roundabout. Showing Frosts Road - lots of water and difficultly getting down there too.
5. Saltaire Road, just around the corner from us. This is part of the route we walked home after collecting the boys from school.
6. Corner Saltaire Road and Bower Ave. This is also part of the route we walked home. It is also, coincidentally, the corner on which I was hit by a bus 2 years ago. As you can see, traffic is very congested and people are having trouble getting around the city.
7. The student army helping clear out liquefaction on Travis Road. They got under way almost as fast this time and have 10,000 volunteers (many more than they can actually co-ordinate). Also shows the traffic on the streets again.
8. Miss 4's room. It's never really tidy, but it certainly doesn't usually look like this. We have a really big cleanup at our place once we're able to get back there. It's also very stinky in there as dishes sit unwashed on the bench and the food in the fridge and freezer is going off. Hubby is going back tomorrow to tidy up a bit and get it ready for when we are able to go back once power is restored over there.

Date: 2011-02-24 04:46 am (UTC)I got a decent sleep last night because I was so exhausted after the first night. Dunno how it will be from now on, but I'll either sleep because even though this is massive we have been through so many aftershocks already that I'm used to them or I'll stay awake like last time. Either way, I know I'll survive :D
I have started crying already which is good. I bottled it for so long last time it wasn't healthy - so I think we're doing okay.
Thanks for your thoughts and more huggles back to you.

It's amazing the things human beings can get "used" to, but I'm glad to hear you're weathering a bit better.
