Title: Moment of Truth
Author: rumpelsnorcack
Fandom: The Hunger Games
Rating: Teen (mostly for a little violence and minor-character death)
Characters & Pairings: Peeta.  Hints of Peeta/Katniss if you squint.
Word Count: 1076
Summary: Peeta deals with his conscience after he goes back to the girl from District 8 in the first Games.
Notes: Many thanks to my wonderful beta mollywheezy who always knows the right thing to say.
Written for my son, who got very confused, when reading the book, over how a character could be 'good' but also be a killer.  This was my attempt to explore that in Peeta's case.
Disclaimer: Sadly none of the characters are mine, I just enjoy hanging around in their sandbox.

Title: An Enemy Within
Author/Artist: [ profile] rumpelsnorcack
Rating: PG-13
Characters & Pairings: Amy/Rory, Eleven
Content Note: Discussion of infertility and brainwashing
Word Count: 8,314
Summary: When Amy finds out she can't have any more children, she discovers she has more darkness inside her than she had bargained for.
Notes: Many thanks to the wonderful [ profile] a_phoenixdragon and [ profile] mollywheezy who have been extremely supportive through this whole process. I started this fic immediately after the first episode of S7 aired because it frustrated me how quickly the situation was dealt with. But then I let it fester on my hard drive until now. So, here we have it - slightly belated but done all the same!

So I have been a little MIA lately, because ... well, because life. You know.

Still, there has been a bit of fandom stuff in my life so I figured I may as well discuss it a bit. Get the old toes wet on LJ again, and all that.  First, and probably most fun & most scary is the Lizzie Bennet Diaries.  Fun, because wheeeeee, we're getting close to the end. Only two episodes to go & the last few have been all filled with squee and fun and all.  Not to mention ties. Ties are good :)  Scary because an idea [ profile] lorelaisquared and I had to re-watch while reading along with P&P exploded & is now huge and scary and just plain daunting.  The result of that discussion is over here. Darceny is live for discussion, chat, squee & other similar fannish stuff.  The actual read along will begin in just over a week on Monday, April 1st.  I hope to see lots of familiar faces as we go through it all again :)

Also - I have been going through my WIPs on my hard drive, just because & there are several that might just be close-ish to being done.  I'm going to open it here to see which one (or ones) people would like to see done first.  They are:

1.  a new chapter of my old, very neglected Harry/Ginny epic detailing their post-Hogwarts life. (Harry Potter)
2.  a short one shot set after 'Angels Take Manhattan' as Brian finds out, then comes to grip with, the loss of Rory & Amy into the past. This is probably the closest to being finished.  (Doctor Who)
3.  beginning to post my NaNoWriMo from last year. Intended to be 50 short chapters focusing on Rory, it ended up (so far) being about twelve, but there is a plan for the rest.  (Doctor Who)
4.  my take on why 'I can't have more babies' would cause Amy & Rory to get their silly not-very-long divorce. Involves Kovarian & brainwashing.  (Doctor Who)
5.  the oldest - and least finished - set during 'Vampires of Venice'-ish time, an exploration of the cracks in the wall & the Torchwood rift as part of the same phenomena. Contains Eleven, Amy, Rory, Jack, River & Gwen. (Doctor Who, Torchwood)

Hmmm, that's very Doctor Who-centric.  Oh well :D  Feel free to put your thoughts in the comments.

I've been meaning to update for ages, but I haven't been able to bring myself to do it.  Because, well, Ponds :-(  I'm going to miss them so much, and apparently the way I deal with that is to write fic - and then to not-finish the fics (yes, multiple), because presumably my brain thinks that finishing the fics will mean finishing saying goodbye and I still kind of don't want to.  I should do it though.  Two in particular I'm quite attached to - one exploring the ridiculous reasons behind their 'divorce' in ep 1 and one exploring Brian's reactions to the end of ep 5.  So yeah I should finish them. I should particularly finish them because ...

I'm doing NaNoWriMo again. Because I'm daft, I guess.  My NaNo this year is going to be fanfiction. I normally do original fiction for NaNo but this year I need something less intense, so the longish history of Rory Williams-Pond will be the result, I hope. If I manage to get to the 50,000 words.  With earthquakes and elections I haven't managed the 50,000 for the last two years so this year I want to get my mojo back.  Here's hoping I can do it!

I have other Who-related things to write about but ... Ponds.  They kind of took over my head and I can't remember the other things I was going to say.  I can't even really write about them so much right now because, like I said, apparently my brain to use fic for that. Which is nice if it would only let me finish the darn things :)

I watched the footage of our team from Comic-con talking about Doctor Who and it hit me viscerally that Amy and Rory are going to leave.  I understand that that is fairly obvious and has been since the day they appeared on the show and that in many ways it's well overdue - they hung around longer than most other modern era companions.  Team Doctor kept stressing the message that this is how the show works and it's necessary and I agree with all that. What got me was realising for the first time that characters I'm totally attached to are going to leave.  I've been sad before, mourned other companions before (Donna, for example - her ending will never not hurt me) but it's always been with a sense of 'yay new companion, so excited' or 'Wheeee! New Doctor, it's about time' etc.  This time, while I'm curious about the new companion I know I'm going to be devastated when Amy and Rory leave.  I'm worried that I won't re-engage with the show again too.  I've always enjoyed it, looked forward to it, been excited to see what was coming but I've seen the way die-hard Rose fans have been about everything that happened since and I'm afraid the same will happen to me.  On the plus side, we still have Moffat running the show (yay!) and we still have Eleven (double yay) so I hope that's enough to push me past the loss of the Ponds.  There was a rumour back a while ago that Mat Smith would be leaving the show after this season and I remember getting quite upset at the idea.  Back then, while I was attached to Amy and Rory I was quite prepared for them to go (it was, I think, between the first two Eleven seasons) and I think it would have been easier if they had gone then ... or in the middle of last season as it appeared they had.  Now, because they've 'gone' and/or died and come back so many times, I think it's going to be harder.

Anyway, that's me - a bit of a maudlin thought on what this companion switch will mean to me.  Still, maybe once they've gone I can go back to not being completely stressed every time something happens in case it kills one of them. Here's hoping I recapture what I had in my teens when watching Four and Five or how I felt watching Nine and Ten. I doubt I'll love any future companions in the way I have loved Amy and Rory, but I can try to regain what I had before.  Besides, it was mostly (so far) season 5 that made me feel the way I do; season 6 has been hard in many ways so perhaps a new companion can wipe that slate clean a little and rekindle the happiness that was always hiding behind the stresses of season 5.  Season 6 in many ways was a little too dark for me, I think.

So, here's to knowing I'm going to cry like a baby when Amy and Rory leave but here's also to hoping for a fun rebooted future!

Title: All's Fair During a Plant War
Author/Artist: [ profile] rumpelsnorcack
Prompt: #22: Neville helping Harry and Ginny out with their not so green thumbs
Rating: G
Warnings: n/a
Word Count: 2,609
Summary: Harry and Ginny think a competition involving plants will be easy to win.
Notes: Many thanks to the wonderful [ profile] whirlgig who held my hand through many of the stages this fic went through and also did a fantastic beta job to get it up to scratch.  Also thanks to [ profile] lorelaisquared who helped with the initial brainstorm and was an excellent cheerleader through the whole, drawn out, process.

'It's not a competition, Ginny,' Harry growled, 'but if it was I'd definitely be the winner.' )

Ship meme

I stole this from [personal profile] lorelaisquared who did it ages ago.

How it works: I post descriptions of 20 couples I ship, you all guess in the comments and whoever gets the most correct gets to choose a ship for me to write a drabble for (which could be interesting since for some of these I have NO idea how to write the pairs, but I will gamefully try). Some of these are obscure, many are things I will never have spoken about on here and one is added by my husband. They come from books, movies, TV shows and video games. So have fun :D

It's very shippy under here ... )

I got distracted this morning by an article in the local newspaper about Doctor Who, as you do.  While reading I came across this little gem by Matt Smith:

"I had to wait for scripts, of course, to really sort of inform the man, but I knew that he was really clever, and silly  a bit like Einstein. So I started writing some short stories about the Doctor and Einstein."

I don't know why it pleases me so much that some of our Doctors are sort of closet fandomers but it does.

To the surprise of absolutely no-one I sorted into Hufflepuff after I got my welcome owl to Pottermore :D I am finding bits of it a bit hard to navigate but that's possibly because I'm on a laptop and so have a touch pad thing rather than a mouse. But on the whole I think it's really fun and I'm going to win lots of House Points if it kills me *goes off to brew more potions*

For those interested, this is the Hufflepuff prefect's welcome letter (for those not interested and/or who want to wait, I guess shut your eyes and run past the italicised bit):

Hufflepuff welcome letter )

In other news, it was Seth's birthday during the week of the big snow, so he had a bit of a fizzer of a birthday - we were supposed to get together with various family members for dinner that night but we were basically totally cut off.  Driving wasn't advisable even if we could have brought ourselves to try.  So, instead we took him down to the beach to take their boards down the sand dunes - now snow dunes :D  He had a great time but the other two hated every minute of it and were so miserable that they kind of ruined it for him.  But nevermind - he enjoyed the snow and got Doctor Who stuff for his birthday which he just adores.  And last weekend we took him to the Flying Burrito Brothers for dinner and he has decided it's the best place ever and wants to go back every week so that's a good thing I guess.

We have also had two very gorgeous days this week - a sure sign that spring is on its way.  The one street I watch to see blossom arrive and truly say spring is here hasn't done its thing yet, but there are enough signs that I already feel a lot better than I have in months.  It is odd to think that this time last year I was doing the same thing but that things were so different then.  It kind of hit me today that this is the last week when I can say 'a year ago things were still normal' after next weekend we click over to having lived with abnormality for over a year.  I went down to the Council's roadshow thing yesterday and they have a timeline for each of their proposed improvements and it was weird to see it and go 'oh, 2013? Yeah that's nice and soon' and then take a step back and say to myself, wait - that's over a year away.  By the time any of that happens we'll have been without a central city for two years and that's mind boggling.  To not be allowed into our own city for that long is inconceivable.  But anyway, the point of it was that spring is coming and that's a nice thing :)

Title: Nine Sacks of Pipi
Fandom: Doctor Who
Word Count: 400
A/N: Pipi is a type of shellfish and I had no idea what to do with it until the ever lovely [ profile] whirl_gig  made this suggestion and I ran with it.  She also did a great beta job on this one, but I ran out of time to carry through on all her suggestions so all the clunky writing and mistakes are still entirely my own.

Title: Eight Plants of Puha
Fandom: Harry Potter
Word Count: 500
A/N: Puha is a plant I have had very little to do with.  As I have no idea even what it tastes like I decided on this one to go with the picture from the book as inspiration.  If you think of Harry and Ginny as a ladybird and a worm, as in the illustration, then it kind of almost makes sense :D

Fandom: Harry Potter
Word Count: 600
A/N: Poi are pretty common in Maori performances.  In my experience it's relatively easy to pick up the basics of short poi (I can do some basic stuff myself) but the really intricate movements and the long poi take a lot more practice and skill.  In this story the poi used are all long ones, just because.
