Bored of all this now
Jun. 19th, 2011 11:57 pmThe novelty has worn off now and I'm very much of the opinion that all of this can just go away. Even writing this post was interrupted by a power cut. It was our first post-dark power cut experience - not fun, and it taught me to make sure all torches etc are exactly where they are supposed to be because of course none of them was anywhere I could put my hands on them in the dark. At 6.30pm just when we were getting the kids into the bath to wash their hair the power shut down and we ended up heading to a friend's house where they have a gas fire that doesn't need electricity to work. We were talking about the whole experience and came to the conclusion that in September it was a novelty and we weren't exactly happy, but boiling water and using sanitiser was new and kind of almost exciting in a way. In February there was the excitement of having finally got a real emergency kit sorted out and being able to use it. Now, there's a sense of 'not this again' - I almost forget to sanitise after washing hands. I have to remind myself not to use tap water etc etc. It's just not 'fun' any more. Not that we ever really had fun, but there was a certain sense of being in something new and interesting and just ... well, different. Now it's (as a friend from school put it) 'same shit, different earthquake' and I'm over it. I just can't be bothered doing it again. The authorities are all worried about outbreaks of disease and to be honest I think this time they are right to worry. I tend to be paranoid about this sort of thing, and if I'm apathetic enough to almost forget to do all the proper care then people who aren't as usually careful as me are likely to be even less bothered than I am.
I was going to go out and be useful by shovelling silt this weekend but I managed to lose one of my contact lenses on Saturday so until I can get an appointment to get new ones I'll be close to home for the meantime. To salve my conscience on that I'm doing some baking to take (or rather send as I can't drive as yet) along to the volunteers. It's miserable weather out there and I think they need a bit more of a pick me up than before. I'm also going to go out there and shovel once I get my eyes back into some sort of visability. Shovelling silt is one of the least pleasant things I've ever done in my life (it's so very heavy and your muscles ache after just a few shovel fulls) but the more people who help out the faster it will go. We've been lucky again and I still feel like I need to help those who haven't been as fortunate - I see the devastation this is having on so many of the families at school and I feel the need to help them or people like them.
Anyway, enough doom and gloom. It's time for more YouTube fun times :D First is some footage someone put together to dramatic music of the quake as it hit on Monday. I particularly like the portentous rumblings of the music as the quake time approaches but the people in the shop remain oblivious. The 'credits' at the end are a bit of a laugh too.
Then there's 'The Muntstones' - a parody of the Flintstones obviously. This has been doing the rounds of Facebook and twitter as well. It's another bit of silly quake fun - shows the city centre but the words make it a bit more fun.
And that'll do me for the day I think. It's an odd feeling to be bored by earthquakes and their aftermaths now, but there you have it. Disasters can get boring - the things you learn :D
